Pennsylvania Dutch
Are the Pennsylvania Dutch and Amish the same?
Heavens no! They are closely related, but not the same thing. The Pennsylvania Dutch ("English") are the "fancy" Germans who immigrated to Pennsylvania in the 1700s. The often wore colorful clothes. These were the German mainstream. Many of them were Lutheran in religion. Over time, the Pennsylvania Dutch adapted to the times and accept the new inventions like the telephone, electricity, and later cars. The Amish, on the other hand, the "ordinary" German was always black or dark clothing. Their religious beliefs were Mennonites or Baptists. They are pacifists. They want to remain separate and distinct from the world around them so that they no electricity or cars.
