Recipes for Chinese Spring Rolls

Chinese spring rolls are among the most common appetizers, not just in Chinese restaurants but in many other cuisine too. This is because the recipes for Chinese spring rolls are simple and making Chinese spring rolls is easy. Thai spring rolls, on the other hand, are more difficult to prepare than Chinese spring rolls. Recipes for Thai spring rolls are also more complicated than recipes for Chinese spring rolls.

Recipes Chinese Spring Rolls

As with other types of food, there are good recipes for Chinese spring rolls and there are cheap recipes for Chinese spring rolls. In good restaurants, the best recipes for Chinese spring rolls are used including more meat and better parts of the meat whereas in cheaper restaurants, fatty meat may be used and skimming on the meat is common. Sometimes, vegetarian spring rolls are more popular. The amount of oil used in the recipes for Chinese spring rolls is also important. In cheap Chinese restaurants, you will see Chinese spring rolls dripping with oil and fat whereas in good Chinese restaurants, Chinese spring rolls are more dry and more appetizing to eat.

Recipes for Chinese Spring Rolls

The recipes below makes about 20-30 fried Chinese spring rolls.

1/2 lb. ground beef
1/2 lb. ground pork
4 oz. chopped raw shrimp (if desired)
1/2 lb. shredded cabbage
1/2 c. bean sprouts
1/3 c. grated carrots
1/4 c. chopped fresh mushrooms
2 tbsp. chopped green onions
2 tbsp. soy sauce
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. sugar
1/4 tsp. black pepper
1 beaten egg
20-30 won ton (square) wrappers
Cooking oil for frying


Making Chinese spring rolls
  • If shrimps are used, shell and devein each of them. 
  • In a big skillet, brown beef and pork until tender;
  • add shrimp and vegetables.
  • Sauté for 3 minutes and
  • stir in soy sauce, salt, sugar, and pepper
  • blend in beaten egg
  • Cool for 15 minutes.
  • Place 1-2 tablespoons on each won ton wrapper.
  • Roll up and fold the edge, sealing with cold water
  • Fry in hot oil to cover until golden brown
  • Serve with Sweet and Sour Sauce or Garlic Sauce.
